July 20, 2018
This weekend past was the Norfolk Open a 6 weapon tournament.
We had a 8 HFC members who made the trip to the Sportspark, ARU, Norwich for the Norfolk open.
Hannah taking silver medal in women's foil.
Tracey Coates got best placed veteran in the women's foil and Ian Coates taking best placed veteran in the men's foil.
Jaques Portal takes Gold at Stowmarket
July 07, 2018
There s did not start that well being ranked 7th after two rounds of pools.
So his first DE bout was not going to be easy but he started to fence much better beating Rob Johnson of Gt Yarmouth & Waveney 15-9.
The next round he is up against Joe Rance from CADs (Colchester and district)
This was a tougher bout but Jacque comes through 15-13
In the quarter finals he found himself up against Peter Lennard a left hander from Cambridge club.
Peter is a very difficult fencer always seems to get his body out of line, difficult to hit.
This turned out to be a very tough fight, they were always within a couple of hits of each other right the way through. Then Jacque manage to get the lead at 14-11 but Peter fought back to 14 all.
Nerves jingling there was a clash and Jacques comes out with his light the only one on, so Jacques goes through to the final.
In the final he is up against Michael Naulis of Norfolk club who was fencing very well.
Jacques took an early lead but Michael soon brought in back to be even and there is stayed just 1 or 2 hits between them until we get to 14 all. Jacques does not believe in making things easy.
Both fencers at this stage were nervous and tired but maybe Jacques looked the more tired, Michael being the younger fencer.
Michael launched a very fast fleche attack wich Jacques parried, Michael was at full speed and passed Jacques but Jacques was still able to riposte and hit Michael on the back as he passed and so winning the bout and the competition 15-14.

Town and Gown: Success for HFC as they overcome Anglian Ruskin University
March 17, 2018
The contest took place at Kelsey Kerridge sports centre, in Cambridge, and saw Huntingdonshire members take on Anglia Ruskin University in one of a series of events to mark the university’s 25 years of sporting activity in the region.
Teams of men and women fought at all three weapons of foil, epee and sabre in a relay, the first team to reach 45 points being the winner.
Ladies foil kicked off proceedings with the Huntingdonshire team of Tracey Coates, Hannah and Katie successfully combining youth and experience to victory over an enthusiastic team of ladies from ARU, 45-31.
Meanwhile, on the second of two pistes, the men’s event started with an explosive match for the sabre competition. The more experienced team from Huntingdon slowly drew ahead and looked like convincing winners until ARU got into their stride gaining hit after hit with some skilful cuts to the arm from Felix de Mayo. With the score at 44-44 an attack from de Mayo, who had clawed back a 13-hit deficit, was parried by Nico Ignacio, with his riposte, giving Huntingdonshire a single-point win.
In the epee, both Huntingdonshire teams had convincing wins against ARU. Despite some fast athletic attacks from ARU’s men, the better fencing brains of Tim Bissell, Josh Coates and George Partridge saw a score-line of 45-37. The women epeeists of Tracey Coates, Carole Ashman and Diane Pattison were just too good for the ladies of ARU, reflected in a 45-38 scoreline.
In ladies sabre, however, it was a dominant ARU team who overwhelmed Huntingdonshire. Led by the team captain, Eliza Bujor, they stormed to a 45-29 point win against a keen but inexperienced Huntingdonshire side.
The final match, men’s foil, saw Ian Coates, Josh Coates and Jacques Portal take on three competitive fencers from ARU. The local proved too strong for their opponents, sealing the match and winning overall scoring 254 points to ARU’s 210.

Eastern Region At Veteran Winton Cup
September 22, 2017
Veteran Fencers travelled to Shropshire to fight for the honour of the Eastern Region over the weekend in the annual “Winton Cup”. A team fencing competition, the idea of Sir Nicholas Winton, a keen fencer, who rescued 669 Czechoslovakian children from the Nazi’s before WW2 and found homes for them in the UK.
The competition was held over two days at the National Sports Centre Lilleshall, where entrants, all 40 years of age or over, some of whom are Olympians and ex-World Champions, compete in a Team Competition fighting fencers representing 9 other regions from around the country.
Huntingdonshire Fencing Club was well represented with 8 fencers out of a total of 18 in the Eastern Region. Each weapon, Foil, Sabre and Épée, have 3 fencers per team with both men and women competing. Tracey Coates fought in the Ladies foil team, winning 3 of their nine matches. The Mens Foil team of Ian Coates, (Capt.) Richard Sage, Tim Bissell and Jacques Portal won 4 of theirs. Tim fenced Épée on Sunday and along with Huntingdonshire FC team-mates Andy Luckman and Jon Nottingham had 6 victories. Euan Smith was the only Huntingdonshire FC Sabreur, the Men’s and Ladies’ teams earning an impressive nine wins between them.
Sunday evening saw the close of the competition, after 16 hours of combat, with our local team Eastern Region finishing 5th out of ten. This was a great improvement on the 7th place Eastern achieved last year on their debut.

Hannah Wins Luton Open!
May 26, 2017
Hannah took GOLD at the Luton Open women`s foil, what a great result.
Although Hannah had a bit of a shaky start to the day her fencing improved throughout the day and so did her confidence which took her through to the final.
Watching the final gave me great pleasure to think that this young fencer started in the HFC 10 wk beginners course back in Jan 13 and is now in the final of the Luton Open.
As Hannah came en-guard at the beginning of the final you could visibly see the nerves but when the referee (Peter Huggins) call “play” so they disappeared and Hannah immediately went on the attack.
The bout was close but with some very good long attacks from Hannah they started to give her the edge, her opponent Jessica Zhang gave Hannah some difficulties with her attacks but then Hannah found her distance and made some good parries & hit with direct riposte`s. It started to go Hannah`s way, all she need to do was hold her nerve which she did brilliantly and ran out the winner at 15/10.
Well done Hannah, yet another medal for your collection, excellent.
Hannah now fences at Dragon and FCL as well as HFC but HFC is where it all started.
Mike.

Men`s foil
1st Gold medal Dan
2nd Silver medal Richard Sage
Joint 3rd bronze medal Jacque Portal with Phil West of Dragon
There was some great fencing battles but the bout of the day was in one of the semi finals when Dan Summerfield meet last years winner Phil West.
This was a very close fight with some excellent fencing, Phil was counter attacking very successfully in to Dan`s attacks and went in to the first period rest ahead of Dan.
Dan then fought back with some lightning riposte`s. Phil picked up a yellow card for turning his back when trying to counter attack and getting his target out of line but went too far.
Then it was a hit for hit run and it got to 13-14 to Phil when Phil tried the same counter attack and again ended up turning his back but as this was his 2nd offence he picked a red card and gave a penalty hit to Dan making it 14-14 all. Now the heat was really on both fencers, they could afford any errors. Dan went for a very fast attack but Phil parried it, then we got an exchange at extreme high speed of Phil parry riposte, Dan parries the riposte and hits with his counter riposte. The whole action from Dan`s initial attack until his hit with the counter riposte must have been well under 1 second.
This great hit gave Dan the match and his place in the final against Richard Sage who had beaten Jacque Portal in his semi final.
The final was at different pace with Richard with many years of experience knowing Dan was the faster fencer not engaging him in fast fencing phases. Richard looked for counter attacks and attaches in to preparations, all worked well for the early part of the bout but Dan then used distance and very fast attacks and riposte to come out the victor at 15 –10.
All went home having a great day fencing and watching some excellent bouts.
Hannah Medals in Luton!

Team GB Bronze for Silvia at the Veterans’ 2016 World Championships
October 21, 2016
Silvia Brown fenced in the GB Women’s Sabre Team at the World Championship competition held at Stralsund in Germany in October. She qualified for the team earlier in the year at the Veterans’ National competition The Hanseatic City is known as the gateway to Ruegen, the largest island in Germany. It was not an easy journey!
There was a small field of five Women’s Sabre teams but the competition was fierce. In the seeding poule unique, they beat the USA 30-28. This was a tough match and Silvia was on last against Jane Eyre (the reigning World Champion). In an exciting and fast moving fight Silvia secured the victory for the team. Team GB beat Japan 30-26 but lost 30-16 to Germany and 30-24 to France, leaving them ranked third. They then faced a bronze play off match against Japan, winning 30-19 to secure the Bronze Medal. Germany won Gold and USA took Silver.
Silvia and the Women’s Sabre Team GB were very grateful to have received enormous support through warm-ups, advice and encouragement from Prof. Katz throughout several days of intense competition.
Also at the Championships was Jon Nottingham, who fenced in the 50+ (Cat. A) Epee in a huge field of 84 fencers. In this anything can happen! Winning 4 and losing 2 fights in the first poule he was seeded 35th. Jon beat the 30th seed from Sweden, only to lose to third seed Marek Stepien from USA 10/8 in a close and hard fought match. He was pleased with his 28th place as it was a great improvement on his last result, and also because he was the top British fencer in his Age Group.

Captain's Four Weapon 2016
May 21, 2016
The Captains Four Weapon was held on Sunday 22nd May at St.Ives One Leisure Centre. Unusually for a team competition it requires four fencers for a team and is mixed. A team consists of a male foilist, female foilist, epeeist and sabreur. The order in which they fight is drawn at random at the beginning of each match, the fencer’s then fence to the next 10 hit mark or till the end of the four minute period. The bought is won when a team reaches 40 hits or is ahead after the final four minute period.
This competition has proved popular with clubs across the Eastern Region entering teams over the years. This year was no exception with 9 teams coming from Cambridge, Huntingdonshire, Northampton and Affondo fencing clubs.
The order of the four weapons within a bought adds a twist on conventional competition depending on the strength of each fencer in the weapon they are fencing. This makes for an interesting and involved team competition.
This year Huntingdonshire had 2 teams entered and a shared team with Dragon fencing club. Hunts A was Tracey Coates (Female Foilist), Jacques Portal (Male Foilist), George Partridge (Epee) and Euan Smith (Sabre). ‘Not Here’ was Dalila Capão (Female Foilist), Richard Sage (Male Foilist), Ian Coates (Epee) and Dan Tozer (Sabre). The shared team was called ‘DragonHunt’ Hannah (Female Foilist), Dan (Male Foilist), Matt (Epee) and Phil West (Sabre).
‘Not Here’ fought well throughout the day to finish 5th overall. ‘DargonHunt’ and Hunts A both had good days fencing not losing a fight meaning they met in the final. Despite strong performances in their fights Hunts A were unable win out against ‘DragonHunt’ in a tough fight to take second place and the silver medal.
Well done to Hunt’s A on their silver medals!

She won her first de 15:3 and then had semi final where she faced Teegan (from Newham) and was defeated (Teegan went on to win gold). Hannah ended up in 3rd place so got a bronze medal.
